$637,000 Grant to Assist Dislocated Workers in Montana

WASHINGTON — U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao today announced a grant of $637,000, with an initial release of $238,872, to assist approximately 100 Montana workers affected by the closure of the Montana Tunnels Mine in Jefferson City, Mont.

"The grant announced today will help these workers prepare for new careers in industries that offer growth and opportunities," said Chao. "Training for jobs in information technology, health care and environmental cleanup will help them thrive in the 21st century economy."

Apollo Gold Corp., owner of the Montana Tunnels Mine, issued a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification on Jan. 30. Layoffs began in February, and the mine closed completely on May 12.

The grant is being awarded to the Montana Department of Labor and Industry. In addition to occupational training, other services include skills assessment, individual counseling, case management and job-search and relocation assistance.

National emergency grants are part of the secretary's discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state's ability to meet specific guidelines. For more information on national emergency grants and other U.S. Department of Labor employment and training programs, please visit doleta.gov/NEG
